December 3, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaroes -- LAST LETTER!

[Elder Prince comes home on Friday! Please join us for his homecoming on December 16th at 2:20pm with food afterwards at our home. -- Karianne]

we had a pretty good week here. monday was a nice solid p day and tuesday we had a great zone conference with President and Sister Tobias. He seems so awesome and im excited for what he will bring to our mission, I wish I could get to know him better.

wednesday we did an exposition in the city center with a few other companionships and it was awesome. we talked with tons of people and had a lot of contacts to pass around. the only frustrating part was that we talked to SO MANY PEOPLE who live on little farms or little towns outside of the city that dont have missoinaries yet. we spent the rest of the day in our area following up with some investigators

thursday we spent the morning helping the sisters move into their new apartment and out of their old one. their old house had such a cool staircase i felt like i was going up in a tree house. friday we spent practically the whole day doing baptismal interviews in other areas of the city. it is so fun to see the other missionaries have success and the work of the Lord go forth! Saturday was Lucas baptism and it was also a really nice service. I also was chorister... again.

its been such a pleasure to serve a mission. im quite excited to come home but im also quite sad. I love serving these people and I love Bahia. they are so amazing and i will miss them so much. There is truly nothing better than talking to people about Jesus Christ and how we can follow him to happiness. I'm so grateful for the power of the Atonement in my life and the capacity it gives us to overcome the natural man within us (mos.3:19). I'm so grateful to be able to share this with these wonderful people and to feel the Savior's love for them. Bahia is such a wonderful place, especially Salvador, Jequie Vitoria da Conquista, Bom Jesus da Lapa, and Ilhéus. These cities hold special places in my heart and they have changed me forever in ways that i never imagined.

November 26, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaroes

this week was pretty nice!

monday was a good p day and we had some nice visits to finish the night. we were able to contact a media reference Eliene and her family. but we found out that they dont know anyone from the church and havent talked to any missionaries before so we arent sure how the reference got to our phone! it wa sa nice lesson and after we visited Daniele and extended a baptism date to her. she accepted hesitantly...

tuesday we taught adam about the gospel of christ and it was awesome! adam is really the man!! as we got to the baptism part he started talking all about how excited for saturday he was!! it was so special and then he started going thru his whole life story for us and how important this moment would be to him.

wednesday we taught karen and we finally figured out why she isnt baptized yet!!! she has some doubts about Joseph Smith being a prophet. every time we go there she talks about her love for the BOM but for some reason she just cant accept joseph as a prophet. so we challenged her to read his testimony and the book of mormon and pray to God. for some reason during the year that she is investigating the church she never realized the missionaries wanted her to pray about Josephs vision as well!!

saturday we had Adam's baptism. it was so cool. we left the chapel and no one had showed up yet and we were super worried. we went and got him and he was all in his suit and tie and his son was all dressed up and when we got to the chapel it was full of people and they were playing music and had everything set up. then when i baptized him he started crying in the font. it was such a nice meeting. and the branch pres and elders q pres gave way nice welcoming comments. they also made me be the chorister again hahahah i think this branch just likes to make fun of me.

November 19, 2018 letter -- Morada dos Passaroes

we had a dope week. did some divisons and helped the sisters with their baptism.

monday we had a nice lesson with Adão or Adam or the Father of them all (he asked us to call him that) and he is super prepared for his baptism. this has been one of the coolest stories of my whole mission.

tuesday we went to Aeroporto to do divisions with the DL and it was cool! it was so weird to be back in my old area and walk down the same streets i spent time on and visit some of the same investigators i taught hahah. but we had a nice day and were able to have some good lessons. it was so intersting to be with them because they taught me a whole new lesson on patience. Elder Silverio has a disease that causes weakness in his legs and his companion is having problems that seem like arthiritis and they havent been able to get much done. during the division we had to walk slow and stay at their pace because literally they couldnt walk faster than their legs could handle (mos 4:27) but it was so inspiring to see they way they treated the people they were able to visit and talk to on the street as if they were truly diamonds. people treated us rudely and they left smiling because they were able to be on the street and working instead of trying to rest their pain away. made me think about how we treat others!!

wednesday was fairly normal day in our area and we had a nice district meeting.

thursday we were able to do some baptismal interviews and another division with the elders in the brasil area. its always a privilege to talk to these people right before their baptisms. they can be so excited or so nervous and its interesting to see how they react to the baptimsla quetsions. i got to do an interview for a young man named jonas who loved to speak english. we were actually about to do part of the interview in english! but the cool part was the way he changed and his attitude changed responding to the quetions, seeing that he was truly ready and really believed in Christ as his Savior. when the interview started he was a bit skeptical but as we finished he was beaming and smiling because of the sweet spirit we were able to feel. it reminded me of alma 5(?) the question that says "have you seen this change in yourself yet?" the rest of the day and the division went pretty well.

friday was another pretty normal day for us but we had a good lesson with Adão when we were able to teach him the plan of salvation. he remembers EVERYTHING its so cool to teach him. we get there for our lessons and he starts quoting the BOM from memory from the readings we have given him.

saturday we helped the sisters prepare for their baptism in our chapel. they were baptizing someone who has some disease and couldnt be baptized in cold water, our chapel has hot water, so we spent a good amount of the morning cleaning and filin the font then we were able to participate in the baptism.

then sunday came around. and when we went early to get Adam to go to church what did we find? him in a suit with a hair cut and a shave!! he was so excited to go to church that he went out an bought a suit. church went real well, we were able to see a few other investigators who went to church on their own and things are starting to look up here. Adam marked his baptism for this saturday and as long as he doesnt drink anymore coffee everything will go great.

it is such a blessing to be a missionary. i wish i could do it for longer. it is so so fun and amazing to see people who are willing to change their lives and see how the Lord helps them so much. He truly makes anything possible for us. I have been thinking a lot about faith this week and remembering a scripture in mark

November 12, 2018 letter -- Morada dos Passaroes

we found a super cool investigator named adam. we rounded a corner super fast where he was smoking and i almost ended up smoking his cigarette cuz i got so close to him hahaha. but he is so golden!! he ready all the intros to the BOM and the 3 and 8 and JS testimonies and like half of 3rd nephi!! he went to church and stuff but it looks like his ex wife is kicking him out of the house so he might move away before we can baptize him. during our lesson he was like " all of this is a confirmation for me. i have to go to church and preach. i have been feeling a lot like i need more God in my life lately and your doctrine makes so much sense. today is the beginning of my journey" He accepted a baptismal date and everything! i just hope he stays here and we can help him stop smoking!!

other than that the week was pretty much rain and gossip about last sunday from every member we saw. sunday was surprisingly chill and we had some investigators we didnt expect to take at church! then we had some good visits after and ate some good food. we had a pretty nice integration night, we were worried tha no one would show up because of the conflicts but it was full! we gave a nice message and played some fun games. for some reason the missionaries end up doing everything here hahahah the RS and EQ get the responsibilities for the members to do but everyone avoids doing it and throws it on us in the last moment hahaha.

also i gotta learn how to cook mom.

November 5, 2018 letter -- Morada dos Passaroes

it has been eventful here in bahia lately!

last monday was a chill p-day we went and played basketball with the other elders at the stake center! it was nice then we got to visit a contact we made at night and had a good lesson. they werent super open to our message as we had hoped because they frequent another really popular church here in brasil but it was a cool conversation we were able to have.

tuesday we had a cool lesson with geovane and angela (maria's kids) and we gave geovane a baptismal date. it was funny cuz angela accepted the invitation before we even finished our question. unfortunately she is living with someone shes not married to so she cant be baptized.. for now! but geovane is really starting to progress. he has started reading the BOM and is helping his mom study because someetimes she doesnt understand very much. Lots of people here in Brazil have very little education because they worked so much when they were young that they didnt have time to go to school. it is truly humbling to see how blessed we are compared to others around the world.

wednesday we visited Lucas and Patrica (mother and son) and talked with them about the plan of salvation and how their family could be sealed together forever. the biggest news is that President biddulph had to go home permanently because of his health issues. i think that bahia was sad because the rest of the week was nice and rainy.

saturday our zone had some baptisms and we got to do baptismal interviews. its so fun to see all the people preparing and accepting the gospel.
unfortunately geovane didnt make it out to church on sunday but lucas was there and accepted a baptismal date as well! we hope to be able to help them get to these dates despite some difficulties here in the branch.

i read a scripture that i really liked this week D&C 12:8 - we all need to be humble and love others. its really crucial we learn how to accept the Lords will in everything that happens because He knows what is best!

October 29, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaroes (Vitoria da Conquista)

this week was a wet one! its been rainy and overcast all week long! but it was a solid first week of the transfer and we are excited cuz we have 2 greenies in our zone! one is actually Elder Green from Lehi, but i havent met the other yet.

monday we visited Fernanda (less active member) and Maria and her fam. We are still teaching Geovane and Angela and they are progressing slowly. I think Angela got a little discouraged because she wasnt able to be baptized with her mom because of her marriage situation and geovane is just kinda your average 21 year old. He loves LOL and video games so sometimes is a little hard for us to get his attention, i should probably ask mom and dad for tips hahaha. his baptismal goal is coming up soon and we are praying everything keeps getting better! this week president also gave us new goals and mission standards and something he spoke and has been reminding us about are our contacts. we have been doing more contacts than normal this week and its been super cool! we have talked to lots of new people and lots of interesting people and lots of people that thought we were interesting but lots that werent interested. life is about interests.

from tuesday forward is where the rain really got ahold of us. about 60% of our area is dirt roads so it was nice and muddy, and to make things better the days when it rained hardest were the days where people least answered the door! this week was also the 2nd/final round of presidential elections here in brazil and tbh the political season has really reminded me of trump hilary. its one of the only things people have wnated to talk about. this week we caught up with tainara and have been teaching her about the book of mormon. we have had some cool lessons with her and the other members of the family. she accepted a baptism date and was able to explain to us all about the chapter we left her to read. update on Neílson, we marked 2 different days with him but he canceled both days because of work things coming up.

friday morning we actually had a super cool lesson with taina and ornelia and fam about the restoration. they had been visited by the missionaries years ago but the missionaries just never showed up again! we had contacted ornelia a few days ago in the street but she didnt tell us the missionaries had visited her before. we had some visits planned in a different neighborhood but we felt strongly that we should try and go find her house, because she only gave us part of her address, once we arrived we had a really nice lesson and they accepted all our invitations that we made them. its so nice to see how the Lord guides us.

saturday we went to the baptism that the sisters had in the afternoon and we had family night at monicas home with her family and stella/thabata and stella gave the message! its been so cool to see her grow as a member since she was baptized just a few weeks ago and she gave a really nice message about the restoration and bore a nice testimony. it makes me so happy to see people change their lives for the better because of the teachings of Christ and living prophets. we also went to another area to do some baptism interviews for the elders!

sunday was also quite rainy. from 7:30-9 it was just downpour but we were able to get to church ontime with the less active family. unfortunately (becasue of the rain and the election, all brazilians are obligated to vote) not a whole lot of our investigators came out to church. this week i have been studying a lot in 3 nephi where Christ appears to the people in the americas. its so cool to read and compare with the scriptures that he references from the old testament and the teachings he gives that he had taught the Jews. there are subtle but interesting differences that give us a little bit of a different perspective or way to think about his teachings! and in chapter 27 he lays out so clearly his doctrine and the Fathers plan for us. it truly is a plan of hope and happiness!

October 22, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaroes

[Today is transfer day, and Sam is staying in the same area with the same companion for his last transfer.]

monday was a good p day we had a family night at a members home!

tuesday was a normal day we had some cool lessons but the best part was to finish off the night! we were walking to an appointment suuuuper far away and it was already late so it looked like we were gonna get home at like 11. then some member was passing by and gave us a ride to the home! we were able to have a super good lesson with Patricia Antonio Lucas and Lane. they are a part member less active family that we have started teaching. we were able to read the book or mormon with them and we felt such a good spirit reading about the Saviors visit to the americas. Lucas (son) undertood that he needed to get baptized and his parents felt the need to take him to church! sunday they were all there and loved the meetings! apparently lucas was reminding his dad all week about the visit to church they had marked! it was so special. we were also able to get home before too late haha.

wednesday and thursday we had our district meeting/weekly planning and spent the days in a differnt part of our area trying to find some less actives and new investigators. it was fun but not as fruitful as we had hoped. we were able to meet with Luceni about her smoking problem but she is having a lot of trouble stopping and she also has slowed down on her reading. its just too bad!

friday and saturday we had sucess in follwing up with some investigators and members to get ready for sunday. we were able to see the fruits sunday when we had some new faces in church and some faces that hadnt been there in awhile. Also to my surprise Karen and fam from Bom Jesus da Lapa has moved to conquista and lives very close to the chapel so we can start teaching them again. They have been going to church for about a year now but still havent taken the step of baptism, but how many times does an old investigator move into an area where a missionary that taught them is serving? No such thing as coincidence and I think the cards are starting to turn in our favor! im excited to get to visit them again.

in church we talked a lot about mosiah 3:19 and humbling ourselves! humility is so important and helps each one of us grow closer to the Lord. WE must learn to submit to the Lords will, not so he can be happy but so that we can be happy. He does everything for our benefit!!

October 15, 2018 - Morada dos Passaros -- Vitoria da Conquista

our week was pretty good!

tuesday we had lunch SUUUPER far away but the bus doesnt pass there so we walked and it was at like 10:30 in the morning i felt like i was in high school again hahah. we had some good lessons. my favorite was teaching this old lady about the church. she has a niece who is a member and was full of fun questions and comments about the church that other people have made to her (you baptize dead people?? you have dances in the church??? you listen to music other than the hymns??) just imagine trying to tell an extremely religious little old lady about it. we also worked with luceni about her goal to try and stop smoking so her children will move back in with her and when we got to her house we couldnt smell any smoke at all! i was so happy and she is starting to look so much more healthy.

wednesday was a nice district meeting and we ate lunch at a members house that we are pretty good friends with. right when we got there he sprayed some pepper gas (hes a military police) so we walked in the door and just about died from coughing so much hahahah he got a kick out of it. we taught a new investigator Gustavo, a firm agnostic, and had a way cool discussion about the creation of the world and all that God and his plan have provided for us! by the time we finished he seemed really happy and like he had been touched by our visit and was starting to open up his heart. it was so cool to be able to read the scriptures with him and have him ask questions and really think and open up his mind about what we explained to him. we also followed up with maria in preparation for her baptism and her trip to her parents farm went well. we were a little worried her family might say something because they are all very firm in another church but nothing was said and her mom actually pleaded for a book of mormon for her to study! where they live doesnt have church so it was so cool to be able to give a book of mormon! the gospel is spreading!! we ended up readin alma 32 in the dark becasue the electricty was out! it was fun.

thursday our lunch fell thru at the last minute and left us out to dry. so we made food at home. we had a few good lessons and invited some people to our integration night at the church. when we got there we were surprised that none of the Relief Society presidency was there (they were in charge) and our message plan got thrown off because the dvd player broke so we had an impromptu debate about some parables haha i love the parables of Christ. then we had a super fun game. i forgot what its called [Charades] but we were acting out scenes from the scriptures and trying to guess what they were. sadly my team lost because they weren't able to understand me pretending to be samuel the lamanite. I was up on a table with the scriptures i almost lost it hahahha but its just a game right??

friday we filled up the font and had some interviews. it was a rather bland day with some bright spóts! we had to go to the other side of the city to do one interview and hurry back so the DL could do our interview. we also had a bunch of members telling us they probably wouldnt be able to come to the baptism saturday (apparently saturday morning isnt good??)

when we rolled in with maria saturday morning the church was filled with members! it was such a pleasant surprise. the meeting went very well. we had a few nice lessons over the weekend and found some sweet part-member families to teach and reactivate! i have really been loving this area.

Elder Prince, Maria, Elder Machado, and ?
we watched Elder Rasbands talk a few times with some less active members and investigators and it brought such an amazing spirit. The way he talks about banishing our fears is awesome! truly faith in Christ and love for everyone can help us understand and take away our fears! everyone should give it another listen, I am so grateful for our living prophets and apostles, called to guide us in these latter days! They are truly guided by our Eternal Head, Jesus Christ. this is His Church!

October 8, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaros (Vitoria da Conquista)

i really loved conference. it was so nice to hear the prophets and apostles and to hear that SALVADOR IS GETTING A TEMPLE IM SO HAPPY. one talk i really liked was elder hollands talk. i hope you guys were able to listen to it. I am so grateful to have a living prophet who is dedicated to guiding zion!! Christ lives and truly helps guide us every day whether thru personal revelation or the light of christ which is in each of us!

tbh i cant believe it. i really was shocked. cuz the whole time i was in the office i was doing research and stuff about how many members and stakes you need for a temple and i heard a bunch of stuff from temple presidents at firesides and the behavior (of the members) and activity levels in our mission and i thought it would take so much longer. i guess i need a little more vision!!

also sorry i haven't really written you an update this week. just imagine me really dusty because of the dirt roads and lots of people not letting us in their homes hahah thats about how it was.

October 1, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaros (Vitoria da Conquista)

monday was a chill p day. we got elder machado's hair cut at a members house and then slept all day. also got MCDS. we spent the night following up some people that missed church on sunday and we visited Luceni. she is a lady that is trying to quit smoking and has been enjoying church. Her kids moved out because she was smoking so much but now she has cut down her habit a lot. we used to go to her house and not be able to breathe becasue it was so bad and her fingers were all burned from the homemade cigarettes but its getting better! she has been trying to memorize the restoration pamphlet and tries to repeat it to us everytime we go there. She is learning a lot but still has a while to go!

tuesday we found an awesome family! Cleiber Lucitana and their children welcomed us in quickly after we knocked on their door and started to ask us who we were. we taught them the first lesson and right as we got to the First Vision they started telling us about how Cleiber´s uncle had the same questions and he had prayed and had share these questions with the whole family and they have been searching ever since! it was a cool lesson but lucitana doesn't know how to read and their children "don't have time" to help her so we hope we can have some good visits to be able to help her read and gain a testimony of the Book of mormon. we also spent the day following up with some people and reminding Maria of her baptismal date. she was all for it and super excited but her mom was visiting from the farm and she didnt think that these little missionaries were all that. She is a longtime member of an evangelical church so we sat down and went thru the 3rd lesson with her explaining the doctrines and importants of faith repentance baptism and the gift of the holy ghost! it was a nice lesson and we got her approval. the funny part is the maria is 50 and her mom is like 80 hahaha.

wednesday we had a bunch of lessons fall through so we did lots of contacts and asking our contacts for references. and it worked out! we had another awesome lesson with a family in the neighborhood we have been working in and they asked lots of questions. but the whole time their little 2 year old was screaming his head off so it was kinda annoying. we also taught stella and thabata about family history and helped her to start her family tree! we were able to do up until her grandparents but then she didn't have enough information to continue. she has been having some persecution from her family who are in other churches and she has been kinda down this week so it was really nice to have a good lesson with her! she was all smiles on sunday and loved church even though she is passing thru a few problems. We were also able to get out and do some visits to less active young men with the young mens president and we found some less active families that we are visiting now! we came up to one house and were asking about the young man and he said " you're looking for victor? that's me" then went inside and called his mom. while his mom came out and talked to us he got on his bike and rode away as fast as possible hahaha. gotta love it.

thursday we had weekly planning and a really distant lunch so it kinda shook up our day. but we were able to teach some lessons and a few of our investigators went to the branch activity at the chapel! it was a good night!

saturday we had a really far lunch again but we were able to have a super cool lesson with a reference that we got from the sisters. Sara lost her mom a year ago and stopped going to her church becasue she was so hurt. we had a really nice conversation with her about the plan of salvation and she just about told us her life story within 15 minutes of meeting her. it was cool becasue she alrady had a solid knowledge of the scriptures so when we outlined the plan of salvation for her she just started asking questions about her mom. i felt like for every 3 sentences i spoke she asked a question about her mom! it was a cool experience!

sunday i gave a talk in church (yes i still hate public speaking) and it was so fun to sit on the stand and watch 3 less active families walk into sacrament meeting! it put the biggest smile on my face. they told us that they all really enjoyed being in the church meetings again. we visited some references with a member on the other side of our area and did a good amount of walking in the after noon. this week i have been thinking a lot about the blessings we receive for living the gospel. they're big and they're real! all we need to do is put the teachings of Christ in pratice in our lives and we can see the huge effects they have! John 7:17

love you guys

September 24, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaros (Vitoria da Conquista)

thought i would try to get a nice weekly update to you. i think it might be pretty weak.

so monday we had a chill day and got ready to travel to salvador. i got my hair cut and broke off part of the capsule thing for my bottom retainer. but everything is still strong and hasnt broken fully. dont worry i talked to president about it.

monday night we had a nice long bus ride and the mission council all day tuesday! a bunch of training and we talked about how we can find more investigaors and more quality investigators! it was a nice meeting and inspired me to change and try to get better.
Mission Leadership Council
Wednesday we got back from salvador and had to organize some materials and get different things to different people. also elder espirito santo got transferred so we spent most of the afternoon getting his stuff ready, then once we got to the bus station elder sorocaba had only bought his bus for later that night. so essentially we wasted time getting his stuff ready to early. but then we had a way sick FHE with some members and their family who was visiting from out of town. it is such a privilege to teach people about the Restoration and the effect it has on all of us!

Thursday morning we got an urgent call from the Thompsons saying that the sisters needed fans for their apartment because it was too hot. so we spent the morning chasing down fans and delivering them to the sisters on the other side of the city. meanwhile im sleeping at night witha  blanket and a sweatshirt. how in the world they are too hot at night is beyond me. then we had some normal proselyting to finish out the day as well as a thrilling discussion about the book of mormon with Junior and Marcos. lots of talk about open scripture canon and how the bible is enough. who knows i think having more scripture is always helpful! the Book of Mormon is truly God´s blessing to all of us.

the rest of the week was fairly normal except they cut our water! our whole apartment building has been without water since friday so we have been taking showers out of 2 liter coke bottles we carry home from the church! count your blessings!

have a good week

September 17, 2018 -- Morada dos Passaros (Vitoria da Conquista)

so my week was pretty exciting! its been super different to be in an area again! i cant even explain it, my feet are sore and my pants are dusty but there is no better feeling. My companion is Elder Machado from Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil and he was trained by elder Christofferson! Morada dos Passaros is a pretty strong and relatively new branch here in Vitória da Conquista and i am loving it so far. its been so nice to just wake up study and go out to work. its been kinda weird adjusting to the new area because i was in the office for so long with the same members and same area. its kinda the same feeling that i had when i got into the mission and felt like i was in a different world! but its been fun.

monday i spent the day in the office working on the transfer stuff and then i packed my bags and took the overnight bus, yes i do sleep well on buses, planes and in cars. its a blessing hahaha.
Brazil Salvador South office staff with the Biddulph's

Elder Prince, Elder Gray, and Elder Sorocaba right before his transfer

when i got to conquista it was chilly! not actually cold at all but now that i have been in tropical salvador for so long 60 with a little wind is like a winter storm for me haha. we had a nice day working in our area and gettng to know some contacts and investigators a little better. we also had to pick up a medical exam in the city center for another elder who spent the day with us before he went to a different area. got to spend some more time in a public bus! been a while since i have done that too. hahah.

wednesday we took this other elder early to the bus station to meet up with the new elder who would open up a new area. here in conquista there were a few complicated situations so part of our zone got whitewashed and we have had to show some people around a little bit. our lunch was like an hour away and where we went doesnt have buses so we got some steps in as mom would say. then we made some really good visits during the rest of the day. we confirmed the baptism of maristella and thabata for saturday and hlped them clear up some doubts. we also had some new investigators who we really liked Robson, vanessa and their 4 children. its been fun to teach them about the restoration! they dont have a church and areally looking for some help as robson is unemployed recently and vanessa got diagnosed with cancer. its amazing to see the faith of the people here!

thursday we had our weekly planning and some nice lessons in the afternoon. we also had a activty at the chapel for the branch and the other ward here and it was fun. we got asked to give a short message about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it went really well. There were some investigators and less actives who have been having some problems that really enjoyed the message and it was awesome to see their eyes and faces light up. i really think that is one of the best parts of being a missionary. seeing the hope that the Lord's message brings to his children. but the night ended a little strange as some sarcastic comments were thrown around and a relief society cat fight almost broke out during the game after the message.

friday had our district meeting  and visited some investigators to mark appointments and confirm them to visit church on sunday. we also had stella and thabata's interviews and they passed with flying colors. their story is amazing and i cant wait to tell you all about it another time.

Elder Prince, Elder Machado, Maristella and Thabata, and another elder
saturday we spent the morning filling up the font and preparing the chapel for the baptism, at the same time as weekly chapel cleaning and a branch BBQ. you could say that my first week in this new area was very #blessed. The baptism went perfectly and the meat was awesome. then we taught some of the sisters investigatosr about the commandments and the need for baptism and we were able to help them mark baptismal dates! it was interesting to teach with 4 missionaries at the same time and see how elders and sisters teach differently.

sunday went really well. the confirmations were great and we were surprised when our investigators invited some friends and neighbors to come to church with us. we looked like a little herd of people walking to the chapel! the sunday service was awesome and we had a really nice lesson in elders quorum about forgiveness. our investigators also really liked it.

today we have done a little shoppig for groceries and cleaned our house.

this week i read the parable of the 10 virgins more than a few times. its such an amazing parable and really shows us the necessity of preparing and always being ready for whatever could come our way. It is more centralized in the Lord's 2nd coming but i thought a lot about how it could apply to little emergencies that we have in our everyday lives. If we are living the commandments and the gospel, giving a good effort the Lord will bless us endlessly and we will be prepared for whatever could pass in front of us as well as preparing us for the 2nd coming. give it a little read Matthew 25:1-13. He lives! He loves us! He is always there for us. Pray to him in your secret places and he will give you the strength and prepare you to face anything in your lives.

September 8, 2018 -- Salvador (Ondina)

monday we had a meeting with president and a family night with irmão Cely and his family and our investigator Dominique. We talked about things that keep us on the straight and narrow path, theme coming from a talk from Elder Pearson from last year, it wa in the Liahona this month. way good family night and we had ham and homemade-bread after.

Wednesday we had training on how to install OneDrive on the computer and how to use it in the visa process, its like iCloud for microsoft online. in the evening we had some visits but by far my favorite was visiting Romilda and teaching her about the Temple. She is about to have a year of being baptized and we want her to start thinking about going to the temple. Her and her daughter really liked the family history idea and actually started fillin in the family tree and stuff.

Thursday we delivered some boxes of book of mormons to the mission president's counselors home, he will be traveling to visit Bom Jesus da Lapa. Then in the evening we had divisions with Valmir. It wasnt a super successful night because its the night before a holiday and long weekends are everyones favorite party times here in brazil.

friday (Brazilian Independence Day) we had a busy morning with training from SP about how to start the residency process here in brazil. lately we have been in the dark about visa renewal and the ball is finally starting to roll.. as soon as im leaving the office. we also taught Nilza, Isaiah's wife, the first lesson. So far it has been pretty difficult to get her to listen to us because of somethings that happened in the past and because she is a bartender.. of the bar.. in their house.. but things are coming around!

September 1, 2018 -- Salvador (Ondina)

monday we had a nice meeting with president to plan out his week and some stuff for the zone conference. We also taught lessons to Alex/ Val and then Mateus and Geisa. I also got to do a little bit more in depth studying on the visa process so i dont leave president and elder gray in the dark once i leave the office haha.

tuesday we picked up elder sousa from the airport. he was a temporary missionary then went to the MTC and came back to our mission! I got my brazilian ID card at the airport, a cool little souvenior for me! then we had training from Sao Paolo (headquarters for the Church in Brazil) in the afternoon, made a spreadsheet to organize our visa progress hahah. and taught a lesson to a lady we contacted last week, Eunice. it was a nice lesson.

wednesday we had a dope district meeting. we also had to visit the notary to get some divorce papers for investigators in another city who will be getting married and baptized! and taught some nice lessons. We were able to visit with Luciana and Antonio and teach them about the law of chastity, always a risky one, but they really loved it and understood. Its been so nice to teach such a cool family and see how they truly feel about our standards and their excitement to live them. then we taught Augusto, haziels stepgrandpa. the first time we tried to teach him like 4 months ago he kinda ran away.. like 5 times.. but this time he came up to us and asked us to teach him. we had a really nice lesson and were able to feel the Spirit testify to all those present. it was awesome considering that their family has been having some troubles lately and we were able to help them understand the importance of families and the gospel.

thursday was rather normal in the office, we had to scan some passports and update some visa applications. then at night we had a nice lesson with dominique and Cristovão and dominique told us all about her family problems and asked us advice on how she could be a good Christian but deal with some of these problems the way they need to be dealt. it was cool to be able to use some stories from Christ's life to help her. as we were teaching about the Plan of Salvation, they loved the idea of a forever family (who doesnt?) and it gave a sweet end to the message.

today we played soccer this morning and had fun!

August 25, 2018 -- Salvador (Ondina)

monday we had an early morning picking up some missionaries from the interior that were coming to the capital and a nice meeting with president to plan for the zone conferences! we were able to get some lunch with vitalina and her son before we completed some more office work. everytime i see vitalina she tells everyone we are with about 'elder cruz and elder prince are the elders that studied with me. i love them" its so uplifting to see her and how the gospel has blessed her life. we had FHE at Diego's home and we took Matheus with us. Elder sorocaba gave a nice message about parenting and how important fathers our in a childs life, just like Our Heavenly Father is so important in our lives!

[a note about the photos--Vitalina sends me photos on Facebook anytime she has Sam over for lunch. I'm very grateful for how kind she is to the missionaries!]

tuesday was a looong day. We had our zone conference (v good, nice spirit) and a trip to the airport. the trip to the airport ending up being alittle bit of a disaster because one sister forgot her passport (missed her flight but she got a later one) and the other sister almost wasnt allowed to board the plane! a stressful few hours.

Salvador Zone at Zone Conference
wednesday our zone had interviews in the office so it was a bit wild here during the morning but we were able to accomplish some good things without getting distracted. Elder Gray and I made a run to the post office to mail some documents to some church lawyers in another state. super fun. At night we visited Dalva, one of our investigators, and talked to her about church and how she liked sunday. she said she loved it and wants to get baptized! but because shes a little older and she fell down some stairs and got hurt last week it probably wont be for a month. She is awesome and has given us all nicknames (elder isn't that hard to remember??). Elder Gray is "21" Elder Sorocaba "16" and I "17". Where she got these numbers is yet to be determined. After we visited a few investigators to mark other visits this week.

thursday was a real nice day. mostly the part at night when we got to leave the office and go teach!! We had a lesson with Antonio, Luciana and Suelen about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. right when we got their we started talking to them about their reading and what they thought of church on sunday and they said they loved it and started talking about their marriage and baptism!!! without us asking!! usually when we tell someone they need to get married they start kinda shying away but we got there and they just started "well yeah we talked about the marriage and thought it was a really good idea for us so that when can be baptized." I kinda sat there in shock, oh how the Lord blesses us. we then proceeded to have an awesome lesson about baptism and the sacrament. and after they gave us hot dogs hahah. i dont think i have ever been fed so much by strangers like I have here in Bahia. and yes mom my stomach is holding up just fine. We also visited Douglas and he said he would like to come to church on sunday, if the water isnt too rough for fishing... oh well.

Friday was extremely uneventful until about 5 in the afternoon. The assistants called us and asked if we could do a division with them because they had double booked their night (we are in trio) so i got myself over to their area for the lesson. once we got to the investigators lesson it fell thru because of some certain circumstances that i wont mention or mom will get scared. but also right at that moment President called us to run some important errands for him so it was a successful night after all, just not exactly how we expected.

today i have gotten my hair cut. thats about it.
Elder Prince (with haircut), Elder Sorocabo, Elder Gray
this week i finished the Gospel of Mark. I have been reading books in the new testament lately and it has been so cool for me. I love the story of Christ's life. "tell me the stories of Jesus, i love to hear". There were a few different stories and parts that stuck out to me but one that i truly love is the story of the young rich man. I think i have written about this before, but i think its so important that we realize what Christ responded and how he responded. before he told this rich man to give up his life, he loved him. "Then Jesus beholding him loved him," (Mark 10:21)  Most days we can probably find something in our neighbor that we don't like, or a certain manner a member of our family acts or does things that might be wrong. The people around us are able to see lots of faults and mistakes we make without us ever noticing them. The most important thing we can do to help ourselves and others is be loving and humble in these moments so that we might improve and they might improve as well. God's plan for us is about growing and becoming better, not being perfect right now, so its important that we look at the world through a more loving lense. there is good in everything and everyone

August 20, 2018 -- Salvador (Ondina)

monday we had a pretty nice day around the office and we were able to do divisions with members. I went out with Brother Valmir and we were able to visit Antonio and Luciana, a family we have started teaching. As we followed up with them, we felt that we should extend a baptismal invitation and they accecpted with enthusiasm! they are so awesome and Luciana told us all about her reading in the BOM and how she love the way she felt reading about the Savior's appearance to the Nephites. We even talked to them a little bit about marriage and they thought it was a good idea!

tuesday and wednesday were fairly normal days. We had a nice district meeting and made some bold goals to really help involve our ward in our work and their missionary responsibilities. We taught Dominique Cristovão and Maria about the book of mormon and talked a little bit about Eternal families and how we can strengthen our homes. Dominique and Cristovão are an awesome couple we have also started teaching recently. Dominique closed her restaurant because she wants to change a few things in her life a tthe moment and she wants to start getting Cristovão going to a church instead of passing his weekends in home. So when we contacted her in the street she was very enthusiastic about us coming to teach her husband. She feels as though she already has a large knowledge of the gospel because she frequents the Catholic Church but its been interesting to see how she has learned and thought of things differently because of our few visits in their home. Great to have an eternal perspective sometimes!

Friday we had divisions with our zone leaders and a member. It was interesting because we ended up with 3 different companionships trying to workin our area! so I went with the member to visit inactive members in the rain. intresting how much Bahians hide from the rain (and the missionaries!) so it was a little bit of a long night. we had a real cool convesation with a young man who was sitting on the ground waiting for his friends. saturday we also had a nice p day but it rained a lot again.

sunday was probably the best day of the week. until lunch. we had marked to meet up with a member early to doa  division and pick up our investigators. When we got to his house he was still in bed.. but right as we started losing hope another young man appeared out of nowhere! we were able to do a division and bring all the investigators we had marked to church! It was cool because on top of all this, a member brought Haziel's grandfather to church! after lunch we had to resolve some things for president so we werent able to make as many visits as we would have liked!

August 11, 2018 -- Salvador (Ondina)

our week was a little bit more eventful this week! monday we had preparation in the office and the mission home for the mission leadership council, consisting of reearanging furniture and cleaning and lots of organizing materials. #secretarylife

tuesday we had an awesome mission council President Biddulphs 1st. we had some real nice discussions that are really going to help our mission out. Sister Biddulph talked about a part of the misisonary manual (i dont think she even knows its in the missionary manual) "Walk quickly and with purpose". she shared an experience from when she was visiting her son's misison and was in a dangerous neighborhood and t really made me think aobut how much we need to find the purpose behind the things we do and not waste our time walking around without purpose, in the mission or in life at home! after the council almost everything went perfectly until some elders missed their bus because of poorly timed visit to the bathroom.

wednesday we worked in the office and did splits with a member Valmir who is quite a good friend of ours here. our night was a little rough and him and I had pretty much all of our lessons fall through but we were able to visit Haziel and talk to him about his responsibilities in church and how his passing of the sacrament blessed the lives of all those in the congregation. He has been passing thru some difficulties with his family and it was nice ot visit him and get to talk a little bit.

Thursday we did splits again with a different member (being in a trio has its benefits) and again Elder Gray and I went to check out some alleyways and stair cases i hadnt even been to. Our area is pretty much just one big hill. We met a really cool lady named Luciana and her family at the very bottom of the stair case we were going down in the end of a dead end alley way. I kinda felt like the missionaries who found Elder Utchdorfs family. hahah. We had an awesome lesson and everything is marked for them to come to church with us on sunday.

Friday we had a pretty busy day and contacted some references that fell thru but we finished off the night helping Romilda  prepare her first talk in church about Baptism! shes pretty nervous but im sure she will do great on sunday! she also made us hot dogs so its safe to say it was a good way to top off the night.

this week i was reading in Alma 5 and 7 where Alma the Younger speaks about the change in heart that we can have when we live the gospel. "..have ye been spiritually bord of God?... have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?"

Im happy to say that I have felt the change in my heart since i have been here in Bahia. I love this people and their great faith in God. We might not always agree on some doctrinal points but im extremely impressed by the faithful people in Brazil and the effort they put in to preach the gospel and love the people around them. it has inspired me to be better and more accepting of everyone around me. but being spiritually born of God is a change that never ends and we can always become better so even though it might get rough, just keep swimming!

have a good week

August 4, 2018 -- Salvador (Ondina)

mom you dont need to explain how [swim] conference works i havent forgotten everything hahahahah. you have a position on the country club swim league board???? i bet you had an awesome time in the little oly pool all day long sweating your butt off hahaha. what were jared and rachels times?? did they qualify and position well in the finals? also WHAT WILLOW CREEK WON????? im glad you guys got the win nice job. swimming has been a huge part of our lives you're right. some of my favorite memories are definitly from swimming. i think my fav though was the district meet at the U my senior year. that was freaking dope. im glad we swam.

dad surviving work? good to hear that he got to see the swimmings thats so fun. how has jareds team looked in practice so far? how did all that off season training benefit him? also how is steve forsberg doing?? im pretty sure he got married and all that jazz. aww i love a good visit to st george. i havent had a real good visit there in so much time. i think i need to do that when i get home. are stan and barb still getting around well? im glad you have a cute little relationship with barb. also i remember who carole and stu are mom hahaha do you think ive just forgotten everything??? also STU IS GETING MARRIED??? what in the world is happening.. we are growing up way too fast.

president and sister biddulph brought it up like 3 times this week.. " elder prince what are you gonna study? what od you want to do with your life? everyone at home is getting married so fast.. we cant wait to meet your wife and kids once we get home from our mission!!" .. okay it wasnt exactly like that but i was like.. woah.. i gotta get on with my life now.. i dont like that..

but it was a chill week. really kinda hectic and busy actually.

sunday was a good day. matheus and geisa went to church with us but left early because their son was being overly active and screaming and stuff. theyre progressing but slowly because its been hard to find a time when they are home to receive us so we can teach them!

monday we spent the day preparing for the transfer and helping president out. Also i received my new companion Elder Gray, from Logan, UT. He will be the new secretary and i will train him until the end of the transfer.
Elder Gray, Elder Sorocabo, and Elder Prince
tuesday was President Biddulph's first time receiving new missionaries! we received some brand new missionaries, elders from brazil and sisters from USA, and it was a grand event. it was extremely similar but differnet from the "first days" with President Bangerter. but the wonderful spirit is the same! we spent the morning in the airport and the evening in the bus station. we only had one mishap where a sister left her ID with the other sister and almost wasnt able to get her bus ticket! i love transfers!!!!

wednesday we got our first real day for me to start teaching Elder Gray how to be secretary. It consisted of explaining something then doing it, then watching him repeat the activity to make sure he did it right and understood. its been pretty chill. i also gave him the phone responsibilities so i dont have to answer it anymore hahahaha.

thursday we had a nice productive day with more learning on elder grays part, took him to have some fun at the notary!!! what a thriller. we also said bye to elders and sisters going home which was not fun. gonna miss elder davis and elder vander werff. and the sister from my group went home. that was weird. then at night we visited Romilda and Daiane's mom and they both made us food i thought i was gonna explode by the end of the night. Bahians offer so much food its awesome, im actually surprised i havent gained more weight.
Missionaries leaving for home and the office elders and the Biddulphs
yesterday was by far the day of the week. we had the biddulphs appointments at the PF so we packed up in the car and made some good visits to the PF (sitting and waiting), the notary (again sitting and waiting), and the bank (sitting and waiting). but we were able to get so much done and now the biddulphs are legally here and they should be able to get their stuff from home thats waiting in storage! it was quite a productive day and fully of nice conversations with Pres and fam. its been cool to learn from him and see his opinion on a lot of things. Its been real interesting to see how he is adapting to being a mission president and the responsibilities he has. at night we were able to visit lucas and teach him the 3rd lesson (he gave it 5 stars) as well as rafael, who is progressing to come back to church!

a nice solid week.
